Do we need bloodshed in every pro-gun congressional district in the country before we wake up and ban assault weapons? A new nonprofit aims to raise enough money to buy the Press Herald and Reade Brower's other newspapers. Democracy demands our resolve, despite what three quarters of Republicans in the Maine House may think. My decision to retire came in January.
I want to go fishing more with my grandsons. I want to revel in more time with our five children and their spouses — they make me prouder every day. I want to finish restoring the old barn across the road from my house that I bought with my oldest and best friend, Rich Downing. People often have asked me when I first knew I wanted to be a journalist.
On the back, there was one metric that tripped me up every time. It said simply: Self Control. Who knew? Hence the dozens of phone calls to and from our beloved children, my ever-supportive siblings, my closest and oldest friends. Then there are you, my faithful readers, many of whom have emailed or called to ask about my absence. And my amazing wife, Andrea, and I fully intend to go ahead with a long-planned vacation to the Virgin Islands — if anyone deserves a break from this Maine winter, she does. All those questions that go through a young mind when you're changing your locale.
And it's become more than a home to me. I mean, I have developed a love for this place that I've felt for nowhere else in my life. It truly, truly is a unique and special place to work, and more importantly, a unique and special place to live. Now, Nemitz says he looks forward to spending more time with his young grandchildren and completing renovations on a home he jokes are ten years overdue.
But Nemitz says he's told his former bosses he could be tempted to write the occasional column, especially if it draws on his year history with the state of Maine.
